You've done the touristy stuff. To help you transition from being a tourist to a local, here's a week of travelling and eating around Sydney, perfect for a rest week after an assessment or exam. Each takes about half a day so go at your own pace.

Monday - Marrickville (morning->afternoon)

  1. Brunch at any of the great cafes on Marrickville road.
  2. Check out Marrickville Library (winner of multiple design awards)
  3. Have a late lunch at VN Street Foods and/or Marrickville Pork Roll

Tuesday - Auburn (morning->afternoon)

  1. Grab some Afghan bread and coffee in the morning Auburn station
  2. Take a bus to Auburn Botanic Gardens (Cumberland City Council resident gets free entry, non-resident $7 entry).
  3. Come back for an early dinner at Jasmin1 (Lebanese)

Wednesday - Sydney Olympic Park (noon->evening)

  1. Pack a picnic or BBQ
  2. Head to Olympic Park station
  3. Have a nice picnic or barbeque around Treillage Tower
  4. Take a stroll around Badu Mangroves (a unique "swamp" environment), Hornswaggle Observation Tower, Wentworth Common and then back to the train station.

Thursday - Newtown (noon->evening)

  1. Head down King Street, you can take a self-guided tour of Newtown street art
  2. Various pastry shops of note include The Pie Tin, Sweet Lu Newtown, Black Star Pastry, Bourke Street Bakery Newtown, Le Gourmand and Azuki Bakery.
  3. Various restaurants of note include Ariana's Place, Pastizzi Cafe - North King Street, Hanoi on King, Bella Bruta, CLEM's Chicken Shop, Thai Pothong, Golden Lotus (Vegan), Dean's Diner and Taste of Turkey (and so many more!)
  4. Various dessert places of note include C9 Chocolate and Gelato, Adora Handmade Chocolates, Hakiki Newtown (Turkish ice cream) and many others!

Friday - Burwood (noon->evening)

  1. Grab brunch at one of several Hong Kong-style cafes near the station.
  2. Relax and vibe at Burwood Park.
  3. Start your night early and check out Burwood Chinatown for a variety of Chinese and Asian food as well as live performances.

Saturday - Glebe (morning->afternoon)

  1. Head to Sappho Books, Cafe and Bar for some brunch
  2. Check out Glebe Markets for the vibes, snacks, clothing and knick-knacks.
  3. If you need some water in your life, head all the way down Glebe Point Road to the Glebe Foreshore (walk or bus), then walk towards the new Fish Markets (under construction), and then down Wentworth Park Road and Bay Street to get back to Victoria Park.

Sunday - The Rocks (morning->afternoon)

  1. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art (the MCA Cafe at Tallawolada is a bit pricy but so is the rest of The Rocks)
  2. Head to the Rocks Markets for a snack
  3. Check out Foundation Park and the Rocks Discovery Museum (free)
  4. Head over to the Observatory Hill Park to chill with a view of the city skyline
